Your guide to air conditioning definitions:

Air conditioning filter

The air conditioning filter is one of the most important parts of your system. Usually made of a fine material like pleated paper or cloth stretched across a sturdy frame, it’s purpose is to clean the air that passes in and out of your HVAC system.

Your air conditioning filter helps keep your air clean and maintains the air quality, which can have a major impact on your health and productivity.

Ducted

Ducted air conditioning involves an internal fan being installed in the roof of your home. This is then connected to various rooms in the house through a series of ducts and vents.

This allows for consistent heating all the way through your home. Ducted units are ideal for larger, more open-plan spaces and use reverse cycle technology for energy efficiency.

HVAC

HVAC is an acronym that stands for – Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. This is in reference to the type of services a company provides. We’re a HVAC provider meaning we can maintain and install heating, ventilation and cooling systems!

Refrigerant

Refrigerant refers to the substance that ‘conditions’ the air blown through the system. Without refrigerant, air conditioning wouldn’t exist.

Reverse-cycle

Reverse cycle units can provide both heating and cooling solutions.

The system occupies technology that can reverse the refrigeration cycle, allowing the unit to cool in summer and heat in winter. Looking for the best of both worlds? Reverse cycle is the way to go.

Split-system

Split system is a popular type of air conditioning unit in Australia. It’s better recognised as an individual system mounted to a wall which cools and heats one room. They work well for smaller homes.

VRF

VRF refers to Variable Refrigerant Flow systems which is often used in air conditioners.

This term is used in accordance with technology that only circulates the minimum amount of refrigerant needed at any one time. It is a great way to cool (or heat) large spaces in a way that is energy efficient! Choosing the right air conditioner is a great way to reduce your electricity bills.

VRV

VRV with a name slightly different to VRF, VRV refers to the same type of technology – both are based on Inverter technology compressors. VRV, which stands for Variable Refrigerant Volume is a term that was registered by Daikin during the early 1980s. Nowadays, VRF is the more commonly used term for this system.

Zoning

Zoning refers to the process of controlling the temperature of the air conditioning in separate rooms of a home or building.

While older systems could only stay on one temperature, newer systems allow you to control the temperature in separate rooms though one unit.
